Ahh, Monday! A fresh start to a new week full of possibilities.Why not begin your week with a healthy and positive change by going meatless?
No, we’re not preaching some hippy-hellfire telling you to banish burgers forever. Instead, we are suggesting you take a minute to think about the positive changes and health effects of reducing the amount of saturated fat that you consume in your diet.

Meatless Mondays is actually not a new idea. The theme originated during both World Wars and has recently been revived in an effort to promote better health and social consciousness. Now, chefs like Mario Batali and Jamie Oliver, restaurants all over the country, and even school lunch programs are all joining in the movement.
This is a major effort to help Americans take control of what they ingest. According to a recent article in The Augusta Chronical, the national obesity rate is now at an estimated 26.7% which is the equivalent of about 72.5 million adults! Sid Lerner, a major voice for the MM campaign, reports that the average American consumes 224 lbs of meat a year! Think about the size of a 224 lb animal. Kinda gross, right?
Still need a little more encouragement? Here’s some food for thought about what Meatless Monday can do for you:
1. Healthier Hearts!
While health conscious people often stick to lean meats, going meatless will undoubtedly cut down on the amount of saturated fat that we ingest. That means less clogged arteries which in turn reduces your chances of heart disease, stroke, and weight problems.
2. Extra Vitamins and Antioxidants!
Why not take the opportunity to add extra color to your Mondays as well? Upping the variety of fruits and veggies in your diet will also boost the amount of antioxidants that your body receives. That means extra cellular repair to reverse the signs of aging, promote better health, and improve the overall functioning of your body.
3. Better Skin and Hair!
We can’t stress this enough! A diet full of fresh, non-processed food will actually show results right on your face! You can expect to see shinier hair and glowing skin as a result of eating more vitamins and minerals found in plant-foods.
4. Protein Power!
Don’t be fooled about needing meat for protein! According to MeatlessMondays.com, the average American consumes between 160-190% of the USDA guidelines for protein EVERY DAY! Unfortunately, this is not because we’re all eating egg-whites and skinless chicken.

5. Save $$$
For anyone who says that eating more produce costs more money consider this. When you go out for lunch today, check out some veggie options on the menu. We guarantee that they will always be the least expensive options. You’ll find that the same is true at the store, where meat alternatives run about four or five dollars vs. the animal equivalent at around six dollars or more for the same serving.
Cutting out a serving of meat at three meals on Monday could save you about ten dollars a week. That could be an extra $520 at then end of the year! That’s the cost of most gym memberships, so we think it’s a match made in heaven 🙂
